Organizational Structure

How does TUM function as a modern scientific enterprise and one of the leading universities in Europe? Our university is organized in a dynamic structure geared towards the challenges of the future. Change is our only constant.

An internal structure that fosters innovation

Our Schools form the academic foundation of our university, connected by integrative research institutes at the interfaces between disciplines. Through system-integrative networking in the course of our extensive TUM Agenda 2030 structural reforms, we are building a matrix organization for innovation in research and teaching. This is the most extensive reform in our university’s history, which stretches back over 150 years, and crucial part of TUM Agenda 2030, a future-focused concept supported by the Excellence Strategy of the federal and state governments.

Modern Governance

TUM combines the productive capacity of a modern scientific enterprise with the freedom in research and teaching of a internationally leading university – which is enabled by an effective combination of decision-making and supervisory bodies. With its governance model TUM has set standards in the German university landscape.

Support for research, teaching and innovation

Professional teams in research management, administration and technical operations support our staff in all areas of their daily work.

Compliance

The TUM Compliance Office ensures the integrity and transparency of our university. As a central pillar of the TUM Good Governance system, it was established as part of the TUM Board of Management and operates autonomously under the Vice President for Compliance.

New Learning

In times of social change, we regard our university as a partner for life-long learning – for talented young minds, junior scientists, and experienced professionals and managers in equal measure. Specialist departments ensure the quality of the study programs offered by our schools and departments.

A paradigm shift in teaching

We strive to educate our students so that they are in an even better position to responsibly shape change processes in society. This is why, through our TUM Professional Profiles, we are gearing our programs of study towards the skills profiles required in future professional careers and the shifting demands of labor markets – while simultaneously fostering our students’ specific talents, individuality and motivation. More about the
