Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Arndt Bode has been awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. The professor emeritus of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) has received the highest recognition awarded by the Federal Republic of Germany for contributions to the public good. He was presented the Order by the state minister for science and the arts, Prof. Dr. Marion Kiechle.
Arndt Bode is one of the world's leading figures in the field of computer architecture and technical informatics. For this achievement, the former chairman of the Board of Directors of the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre has now been awarded the Officer's Cross of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Basis for high-performance computing
Bode played a pivotal role in the various developmental stages of parallel computing which eventually evolved into the high-performance parallel computer architectures of today. These formed the basis for the success of high-performance computing (HPC), which is now indispensable in the natural and engineering sciences, in life sciences, and recently also in the economic sciences.
Laudatory speech from Marion Kiechle
In her laudatory speech, minister Marion Kiechle paid tribute to Arndt Bode's contributions: "Also thanks to your research, Germany is at the forefront of the development of relevant computer architectures. With your great commitment both as a scientist as well as a promoter of the sciences, you have rendered outstanding services to science and research in an exemplary fashion."
Arndt Bode's achievements
From 2008 to 2017, Arndt Bode was the chairman of the Board of Directors of the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre in Garching, one of the three national mainframe centers. Since 2015, he has been the vice-president of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities. At the TUM, the information technology specialist taught and researched from 1987 to his retirement in 2017 in his role as the Chair of Computer Technology and Computer Organization, known today as the Chair of Computer Architecture and Parallel Systems. At the TUM, where he was vice president from 1999 to 2018, he earned the title of Emeritus of Excellence.
Arndt Bode's scientific achievements are documented internationally in more than 250 publications. As the chief editor of the "Informatik Spektrum", the PR department of the Gesellschaft für Informatik, he presented university-level informatics research to a wide public interested in the topic.
