Prestigious award for deciphering proteome

Professor Bernhard Küster receives HUPO-Award

Professor Bernhard Küster from the Chair of Proteomics and Bioanalytics at the Technische Universität München (TUM) has won this year’s HUPO Discovery in Proteomic Sciences Award for his research on the deciphering of the human proteome. This award is presented by the Human Proteome Organization (HUPO), a specialist international institution, and is regarded as the most prestigious award in proteome research worldwide.<br /><br />

The HUPO Discovery in Proteomic Sciences Award is presented for exceptional discoveries and singular findings. It is the leading international scientific award in the field of proteome research. Professor Küster from the TUM Chair of Proteomics and Bioanalytics is the first German scientist to win the award. He shares the award with Professor Akhilesh Pandey from the Institute of Genetic Medicine and Department of Biological Chemistry, Oncology and Pathology at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore in the US.

Studies were published in the same edition of "Nature"

The two researchers received the award for their comprehensive studies produced independently of one another on the human proteome. They carried out their mapping using mass spectrometry. Both studies included a wide range of tissue types and cell lines and were published in the same edition of "Nature". Research groups worldwide benefitted directly from the data. The mapping of the proteome has since enabled statements to be made about which proteins exist in the human body, where, in what quantity and about their composition.

The HUPO Discovery in Proteomic Sciences Award was launched in 2007 and has since been presented annually at the HUPO World Congress.
