Nature Index: TUM the only German technical university in the top 100

Outstanding research in natural sciences

According to the Nature Index, released today by the Nature Publishing Group, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) is one of the four best German universities in terms of research in the natural sciences. And it is the only technical university out of these top German institutions. Overall, TUM comes in at 73rd in the world. The ranking is based on publications in key international science journals.

For the ranking, two panels of scientists select 68 journals centering on natural and earth sciences. The Nature Publishing Group estimates that around 30 percent of all citations in these subjects come from these journals. The ranking also takes into account the percentage of authors from one institute and the number of affiliated institutions per article. Specialist astronomy and astrophysics journals, which encompass a much larger proportion of the total publication output of these fields, are down weighted.

TUM researchers contributed to 508 publications in 2015 – an increase on the previous year (477). This earned TUM 73rd place in the Nature Index for universities, making it the top scoring German technical university once again.

Fourth place among European technical universities

From a European perspective, TUM is one of the top four technical universities, after ETH Zürich (8th place), EPF Lausanne (29th place) and Imperial College London (33rd place).

In the country ranking, Germany remains in third place, behind the US and China.
