The “German Startup Monitor 2017” has made it official: The Technical University of Munich (TUM) produces more start-up founders than any other German university.

The University of Duisburg-Essen analyzed over 1,800 companies with approximately 4,200 founders on behalf of the German Startups Association (Bundesverband Deutsche Startups) for the “German Startup Monitor”. The companies are all less than ten years old.

The analysis asked whether or not the founders were university graduates, and if so, which university they graduated from. The leader in the ranking is TUM, with approximately 50 founders among those surveyed. TUM is followed by Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and RWTH Aachen University. Around 70 companies are founded at TUM every year.

How can you turn your idea into a product?

Entrepreneurial perspectives on technologies and methods play a major role in studies at TUM. Many seminars ask students: How can you turn your idea into a product that you can put on the market yourself? Additional curricula, for example at the Center for Digital Technology and Management (CDTM), are focused explicitly on founding companies. Any student deciding to found a company during or after his or her studies can receive comprehensive support in the TUM Entrepreneurship Center throughout the entire start-up phase.

This year the “Start-Up Radar” of the German business community's innovation agency (Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft) also confirmed the outstanding conditions for start-ups at TUM: The ranking lists TUM in first place among major universities.
