TUM has once again been ranked among the 50 best universities in the world. Only three technical universities from the United Kingdom and Switzerland received a higher tanking in Europe: Imperial College London (ranked 9th), ETH Zurich (ranked 11th) and EPF Lausanne (ranked 35th). Within Germany TUM is ranked far above the other technical universities.

Only three universities in Germany reached the ranking's Top 50: In addition to TUM, LMU Munich placed 32nd and Heidelberg University took 47th place.

The THE ranking takes into account various factors: For one, scientists and scholars worldwide are surveyed on the reputation of the universities in research and teaching. For another, data such as the number of publications per researcher, the citations per publication, the teacher-student ratio, the third-party funding raised from the private sector, and the degree of internationalization are assessed.
