Commitment to women's rights

An important priority of his work was the fight to safeguard women against violence and promote women's rights. To pursue those objectives, Ban successfully pressed the UN to create the organization UN Women. Other achievements included aid packages for developing countries, the investigation of human rights violations in several countries and initiatives for disarmament and nuclear safety and security. He also introduced measures to make the UN organization more efficient and transparent.

After his second term of office, together with the former Austrian Federal President Heinz Fischer, he founded the Ban Ki-moon Center for Global Citizens, whose mission is to promote peace, the empowerment of women and youth, and education.

Ban studied international relations at Seoul National University and public administration at Harvard University.
