Prestigious medal for information systems and management scholarProf. Helmut Krcmar awarded Federal Cross of Merit

Helmut Krcmar, who held the Chair of Information Systems at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) until 2020, has been awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. The medal was presented by Bavaria's Minister of Science Bernd Sibler, who in his congratulatory address called Prof. Krcmar an essential developer of our digital future.

Helmut Krcmar conducts research in fields relating to digital transformation, information and knowledge management, platform-based ecosystems, management of IT-based services and e-government. He was appointed to the TUM Chair of Information Systems in 2002, a position he held until his retirement in 2020. Trained as an economist, Krcmar is an interdisciplinary researcher and was a member of both the TUM Department of Informatics and the TUM School of Management.

Krcmar is a widely cited author. In 2019 he was rated number 1 in the "WirtschaftsWoche Ranking" of economists with the strongest research activities in the German-speaking areas. In July 2018 he was appointed Founding Dean of the TUM Heilbronn campus.

Early to recognize the potential of digitalization

In his congratulatory address Science Minister Sibler called Prof. Krcmar an essential developer of our digital future. “As early as the 1990s you recognized the fact that digitalization has the potential to fundamentally transform our economy and society. In order for this to succeed, we need excellent minds to accompany this process today and in the future.”

Minister Sibler added that as a university professor, Krcmar has passed on his expertise and has supported young Doctoral students in their careers, guiding over 100 doctoral candidates through their dissertations. Sibler pointed to Krcmar's textbook “Information Management” as a standard work for students of information systems as well as to professor Krcmar's application of his accumulated IT expertise not only in professional contexts, but also in extensive volunteer activities.
