Award for highly efficient in-wheel motors
German Founders Award for TUM Spin-off DeepDrive
In brief
- Awarded in the “Rising Star” category
- New dual-rotor motor design delivers higher torque density and efficiency
- Reduces material usage and costs for electric drivetrains
The range and cost of electric cars remain a major hurdle in the mobility transition. DeepDrive has therefore developed a new motor design featuring a dual rotor – a specific concept long considered unfeasible. This technology enables higher torque density and significant material savings. In this way, the start-up aims to make electric cars more efficient and cost-effective.
Six of the seven founders studied mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or management & technology at TUM. They met on the TUfast Racing Team, where students design their own cars for the international Formula Student races. DeepDrive received support through several UnternehmerTUM programs.
Back in June, DeepDrive was among the three finalists for the TUM Presidential Entrepreneurship Award, which honors particularly promising science-based spin-offs. The jury highlighted the technology’s potential to improve the range and cost-effectiveness of electric vehicles.
With the German Founders Award, DeepDrive has now received another major distinction. The “Rising Star” category honors young companies that have already achieved significant market traction with innovative business ideas and demonstrate strong future growth potential. The award also highlights the strength of TUM’s innovation ecosystem, which produced 115 new companies last year.
Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship is part of our DNA. Discover the founding ecosystem of TUM, UnternehmerTUM, and the TUM Venture Labs with a wide range of entrepreneurship offerings – from startup consulting to entrepreneurship education.
The innovation ecosystem centered around TUM is regarded as one of the most successful deeptech hubs in Europe. Its particular strengths are its strong, diverse network and the specific support. In initiatives and co-labs, start-ups work on innovations with established companies, experts, investors and administration. TUM and UnternehmerTUM, the Center for Innovation and Business Creation, support start-up teams with programs that are precisely tailored to the individual phases of the founding process and the teams. The TUM Venture Labs offer direct access to cutting-edge research, technical infrastructure and market expertise in twelve fields of technology. Each year, more than 100 companies were founded at TUM and more than 1,000 start-up teams were supported by UnternehmerTUM and the Venture Labs. UnternehmerTUM, which invests with its own venture capital fund, has been voted Europe's best start-up hub three times by the Financial Times.
