MCube MOSAIQ begins street redesign projects in the Schwabing-West and Moosach neighborhoods
Ideas are turning into concrete changes in public spaces: Following an extensive public participation and planning process, the MCube project MOSAIQ ("Mobility and Urban Climate in the Neighborhood of the Future") is beginning to implement a series of temporary interventions in the Munich neighborhoods of Schwabing-West and Moosach.
In Schwabing-West, installation will begin at the end of July 2026. In Moosach, installation is expected to begin in mid-August 2026. The redesigns will be implemented in stages and are expected to be largely completed by mid-September 2026. They will then be tested in everyday use and scientifically evaluated for about a year. The project is scheduled to run until approximately mid-September 2027. Over the winter, the installations will be adapted and prepared for winter conditions. Starting in spring 2027, further additions may follow based on on-site experience.
MCube MOSAIQ addresses three key challenges facing existing urban neighborhoods: adaptation to climate change, safe and attractive mobility, and a higher quality of life in limited public spaces. This temporary implementation makes it possible to test new solutions in real-life settings, measure their effects, and further develop them in collaboration with local residents.
Moosach: new gathering spaces and safer pedestrian routes
In Moosach, the large intersection of Nanga-Parbat-Straße, Hugo-Troendle-Straße, and Karlingerstraße is being redesigned. Wider sidewalks and improved crossings are intended to enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists. At the same time, green gathering spaces with seating, planting areas, and raised garden beds are being created.
The individual areas are designed for different functions: plans include a garden area, an activity and gathering space, and a mobility zone with bicycle parking, repair services, and a cargo bike rental. Flower beds and trees in planters are intended to provide additional greenery and help improve the local urban climate.
In addition, existing sidewalks in the surrounding residential area will be better connected. Near the elementary school at Amphionpark, new and highly visible pedestrian crossing improvements will be introduced. Colorful installations will mark the crossings, increase visibility, and ensure that the crossing areas remain clear.
Schwabing-West: community gathering space and greener streets
A new community gathering space is being created at Apianplatz, at the intersection of Clemensstraße and Apianstraße. The existing green space will be enhanced with additional plantings and community-shared raised garden beds. New seating areas and parklets are intended to make the square more inviting for people to linger and for neighbors to meet. These will be complemented by bicycle parking, a cargo bike for rent, and a bicycle repair station.
Fallmerayerstraße, between Herzogstraße and Hohenzollernstraße, is also being redesigned in sections. At the intersection with Zittelstraße, sidewalks will be widened, and a new gathering area with seating, planting beds, and trees (in planters) will be created. Marked and unobstructed crosswalks are intended to improve visibility and make it easier for pedestrians to cross the street. Further along Fallmerayerstraße, there will also be bicycle parking spaces, an area for a cargo bike rental service, shared information and gathering points, and a delivery zone.
From community ideas to pilot implementation
The temporary redesigns are based on a multi-stage participatory process. Following an information phase in the summer of 2025, people who live, work, or are actively involved in the neighborhoods were able to submit their own ideas for the design of public spaces. A total of 90 idea proposals were received in Schwabing-West and 46 in Moosach.
Building on these ideas, residents worked together with experts in mobility, urban planning, and urban climate research to develop concrete project concepts during a series of project workshops. In doing so, MOSAIQ is implementing a core principle of TUM: shaping research and innovation not just for, but together with, society. A jury composed of members of the district committees, local interest groups, and experts then selected the proposals, which were prepared for approval by the project team and are now being implemented.

The residents of Schwabing-West and Moosach didn’t just voice their wishes; they worked with experts to develop concrete solutions for their neighborhoods. These ideas are now being tested in everyday life. That’s exactly what makes the MCube project MOSAIQ so special: We’re not just discussing how existing urban neighborhoods can become greener, safer, and more livable—we’re implementing new solutions together, examining their impact, and learning from them for other neighborhoods in Munich and beyond,” says Oliver May-Beckmann, managing director of MCube at TUM.
Residents continue to shape the pilot phase
Even during the pilot phase, community participation remains a central component of MOSAIQ. The project team supports the implementation through neighborhood meetings, workshops, and hands-on activities. Residents can help maintain raised garden beds and green spaces, initiate their own projects, and provide feedback on the use of the new spaces.
To mark the conclusion of the first development phase, action days are planned in both project neighborhoods: on Thursday, September 17, 2026, in Moosach, and on Friday, September 18, 2026, in Schwabing-West, both starting at 4 p.m. A diverse program invites participants to experience and test the redesigns and provide feedback.
“The project demonstrates how city administration, academia, and the urban community can work together to develop concrete solutions for public spaces. By implementing these changes on a temporary basis, we can test new approaches under real-world conditions and directly incorporate the experiences of local residents into improvements that will inform further planning and future projects,” says Georg Dunkel, Director of Mobility.
Scientific monitoring and recommendations for the future
The implementation is being continuously studied through a range of research methods, including traffic counts, observations, interviews, and repeated surveys of residents. Based on the results, recommendations will be developed for planning permanent implementations, the further development of the two neighborhoods, and other city districts. A permanent implementation of the measures is not part of the project and would require a separate planning and approval process.
“We want to understand which temporary measures work well, for whom they work, and under what conditions they can be transferred to other urban neighborhoods. That is why we are monitoring the implementation of the redesigns by examining their effects on mobility behavior, quality of life, traffic safety, the urban climate, and neighborly relations,” says Dr. Stefanie Ruf, MCube Project Manager for MOSAIQ.
