Study compares GLP-1 agonist with standard of care

Obesity drug significantly reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events and infections

People with type 2 diabetes and obesity may benefit from treatment with tirzepatide. Tirzepatide, marketed under the brand name Mounjaro, can reduce the risk of heart attacks and hospitalizations due to infections by about one-third each compared with a conventional diabetes medication. Researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and Harvard Medical School demonstrated this using health insurance data.

Around 350 elementary school children from across Bavaria spent an active morning on the TUM campus in Munich’s Olympic Park. The School Sports Festival marked the opening of Bavaria’s 2026 School Sports Week, with Bavaria’s Minister of Education Anna Stolz and Minister of Science Markus Blume joining representatives of TUM, the Bavarian State Sports Association, the Bavarian Sports Youth organization, and Olympic and Paralympic athletes for the launch.

Medical AI – a look ten years into the future

Artificial intelligence is transforming medicine. But what will be the direct impact in the coming years? A project by M1 – Munich Medicine Alliance takes a look into the future. Using fictional patient stories, experts describe what prevention, diagnosis, and treatment might look like in 2036. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space (BMFTR) as part of the Science Year 2026 – Medicine of the Future.

Five ERC grants awarded to TUM researchers

A newly discovered receptor could form the basis for a diabetes therapy. Physical principles underlying vascular networks are enabling the development of new sensors to study thrombosis. A modified signaling molecule activates the body’s immune defenses in the fight against cancer – these are three of the five projects by TUM researchers that will receive ERC Proof of Concept grants. Through these grants, the European Research Council (ERC) supports innovations based on research findings.

Attackers can extract information about individual patients from AI models

Study reveals privacy risks in medical AI

AI models – for example, those used for cancer detection – are trained on patients’ health data. Even the mere fact that personal data has been incorporated into a model can have negative consequences for those affected if this information falls into the wrong hands. In “Nature”, a research team now shows that, using the right methods, this sensitive information can be extracted from models far more effectively than previously thought.

EU funding for research in astrophysics and cancer immunotherapy

ERC Advanced Grants awarded to Prof. Suyu and Prof. Saur

6G networks will improve network utilization

Telemedicine, continuous monitoring, and remote procedures are becoming increasingly important in medicine. For these to operate seamlessly in everyday clinical practice, data must be transmitted quickly, reliably, and without interruption. Researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and TUM University Hospital have investigated how future 6G networks can manage computing power and data transmission in such a way that up to 40 percent more applications can be run simultaneously.

M1 Munich Medicine Alliance launches “Innovations for Patients” program

Seven projects to advance medicine

The M1 Munich Medicine Alliance is awarding funding for cutting-edge translational research from Munich for the first time. Through the “Innovations for Patients” program, seven research projects will receive a total of 7.45 million euros. Five of the cross-institutional projects are coordinated by researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). M1 is an alliance of TUM, TUM University Hospital, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and its hospital, and Helmholtz Munich.
