Center for Organoid Systems (COS)

TUM opens new center for mini-organs

A new, innovative biotechnology research center has opened on the Garching campus of the Technical University of Munich (TUM): The Center for Organoid Systems (COS) significantly strengthens the Munich Institute for Biomedical Engineering (MIBE). The organoids studied there reproduce organ functions with a high degree of accuracy. They provide new insights into the human body and lay the groundwork for new therapies for common diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease.

Robotic suits tested by older people

Soft exosuit makes it easier to stand up

Getting up from a chair can be difficult for older people, often due to declining strength and coordination in the hip and leg muscles. To help with this, researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have developed a soft, lightweight suit that assists hip extension using artificial tendons. These help older adults to get up from a chair and walk more efficiently.

Supplements on Social Media

“Most people do not need dietary supplements”

It is almost impossible to avoid advertisements for dietary supplements on social media. They are heavily promoted and often presented as cure-alls. At the same time, platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have become major sources of misinformation. Hans Hauner, nutrition specialist and Senior Professor at the Else Kröner Fresenius Center for Nutritional Medicine (EKFZ) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), explains which supplements may be beneficial and when they can pose health risk.

EU funding for projects in life sciences, mathematics, medicine, and quantum science

Ten ERC Starting Grants awarded to TUM researchers

How are human well-being and the health of the natural environment connected? Can the progressive physical impairments caused by multiple sclerosis be halted? How can we ensure that encryption remains secure against attacks by quantum computers? These are just three of the questions being explored in research projects at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) that will receive future funding through ERC Starting Grants from the European Research Council (ERC).

Obesity drug significantly reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events and infections

People with type 2 diabetes and obesity may benefit from treatment with tirzepatide. Tirzepatide, marketed under the brand name Mounjaro, can reduce the risk of heart attacks and hospitalizations due to infections by about one-third each compared with a conventional diabetes medication. Researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and Harvard Medical School demonstrated this using health insurance data.
