Foreign Student’s Higher Education Entrance Qualification

Direct admission to study at TUM depends primarily on whether the school leaving degree obtained abroad is equivalent to the German university entrance qualification.

German Applicants

German applicants, who have not obtained their university entrance qualification in Germany or have not completed their German school leaving examination (Abitur), must also put in a Preliminary Documentation Request (transfer of Abitur) to uni-assist in addition to submitting an application to TUM. Uni-assist will convert your higher education entrance qualification and you can simultaneously apply for admission via TUMonline.

Please note that there are different terms for applicants with an International Baccalaureate Diploma.

International Applicants

Prerequisites

Like German applicants, foreign students applying for admission to study at TUM must also have a higher education entrance qualification. If the school-leaving degree is not comparable to the German university entrance qualification, direct admission can only be granted after attending a Studienkollegs (preparatory studies) and after having taken the university qualification assessment examination. Further information is available in the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) brochure "Studying in Germany" .

Subject-bound degrees

If your university entrance qualification allows you to only study certain subjects in your home country, then subject-bound admission also applies when you enroll as a student at TUM. Your application will only be accepted to the programs you are allowed to study in your home country.

Verification of degree completion

Foreign applicants, who have not obtained their higher education entrance qualification in Germany or have not completed their German school-leaving examination (Abitur), must put in a Preliminary Documentation Request to uni-assist before submitting an application to TUM. Uni-assist uses the uniform and valid guidelines of the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB)to verify whether your higher education entrance qualification can be assessed as a German university entrance qualification. Since this all depends on the country in which your school leaving qualification was acquired, no one uniform rule applies. To assess whether your higher education entrance qualification for studies at TUM is recognized as an admission requirement, the ZAB information system for the recognition of foreign qualifications (anabin) is used as an initial guide. Furthermore, with the help of the Academic and Examination Regulations (FPSO) and the Bavarian formula you can convert your course of study and your notes respectively into the German system. You can find the FPSO under your course of study or on your department’s website.

Please note that there are different terms for applicants with an International Baccalaureate Diploma.
