Visa and residency

Many international students at TUM require a visa to enter Germany for the purpose of studying. As soon as they arrive in Germany, they need a residence permit.

This page provides general information on the topic “Visa and Residency” and the support TUM offers in this area.

Important: Please note that TUM is unable to arrange appointments at embassies or immigration offices and cannot directly intervene in the visa or residence permit application process.

Students are personally responsible for applying for a visa or residence permit in a timely manner.

The information provided by TUM Student Information Services is for general guidance only and is neither legal advice nor legally binding. For binding information, please contact the relevant authority or a professional counseling service specializing in residency law.

TUM documents for applying for visas and residence permits

TUM provides various documents that you will need to apply for a visa or residence permit. An overview of which documents are available where or where you can request them from is provided here.

Important information when communicating

TUM can neither expedite nor directly influence the processing of applications.

Please do not send us any inquiries about processing times or appointments, as we cannot arrange appointments for you at the responsible embassy or immigration office.

As long as you have submitted your application before your visa/residence permit expires, your stay in Germany will remain legal until a decision on your application has been made. This “Fiktionswirkung” (automatic, probationary permit) means that your previous status remains unchanged until you have received a decision.

In some exceptional cases, we might be able to help by trying to get some more information. If you need assistance in such a case, please e-mail us at studium@tum.de and make sure to include the following information:

  • Subject: “Visum und Aufenthalt”
  • State your student number in the e-mail.
  • Forward all e-mail correspondence with the relevant embassy or immigration office with your inquiry.
  • Should there be any prior history related to your case, please provide us with the relevant information. The more details you provide, the better we can help you.

Please note that we can only request information or inquire about the status of your case – we are not able to influence the process.

Instructions for students from visa-exempt countries (“privileged countries”)

Please note that entering Germany without a visa could lead to problems if you need/want to leave the country (urgently) before you have received your valid residence permit. We therefore recommend that you apply for a student visa already in your home country once you know that you will be studying in Germany.

However, if the embassy does not issue any visas, we recommend that you register immediately upon arrival in Germany and then apply for a residence permit for study purposes.
