TUM at a Glance

The range of academic fields represented at the Technischen Universität München (TUM) includes the natural sciences, engineering, medicine, life sciences, as well as economics and social sciences. Teaching and research are carried out in three locations: Munich, Garching and Weihenstephan.

Studying Departments

TUM has a several studying departments or study program divisions. They are part of some departments or integrative research centers, where it is their task to organise the study programs:

Organization of the university

Each department is headed by a dean, who represents the school within the university and externally. The dean of a school is in charge of tasks related to academic programs.

Units within the department are generally headed by a chair. Department chairs are professors. They conduct research and teach courses in their field of expertise (there are also professors who do not hold a chair).

Furthermore, an academic staff is usually assigned to the school’s chair to support the professor in performing research, some work concurrently on their doctoral theses or habilitation, hold lectures and supervise students.

The TUM is led by the TUM Board of Management, composed of the President, four Senior Vice Presidents and one Senior Executive Vice President.
