Changing Subjects or Courses of Study

If you want to change your subjects or courses of study, this is what you need to know.

Changing Subjects or Courses of Study

Generally speaking, you can change subjects only on a semester basis.

Please use the TUMonline portal to apply for the new course of study or the subject that you wish to switch to (see Applying for Admission). That means you are subject to the same conditions for approval and selection as prospective students. As a result, the application deadline for bachelor's programs is July 15 or January 15 (restricted to enrollment in later upper-division semesters). Master's programs have different deadlines.

Attention: If you want to apply now for a numerus clausus program, your attendance to date will not be factored into the waiting period.

Enrolling in later upper-division semesters

If you are applying for enrollment in a later upper-division semester, you must submit a credit transfer report with your application. More information is available here

Enrolling in the first upper-division semester

If necessary, you can request recognition of individual credits after you begin your studies. Please contact the examination committee of the respective school. Further information is available here.

Special advice: There can be many logical reasons for changing subjects, such as a lack of preparation when selecting the subject or evolving interests. Above all, changing subjects does not mean the end of the world.

You should nevertheless understand the academic, administrative and social consequences involved, plus what steps must be taken before and after the change. Oftentimes it also worth examining the types of problems or hurdles that can or can't be overcome by changing subjects.

The central student advising office  or the student advisor for the respective school are good starting points for examining the academic pros and cons of changing subjects or a course of study.
