A top spot in the ranking "Reuters Top 100: Europe’s Most Innovative Universities"TUM is in the top five of Europe's most innovative universities

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) is one of the five most innovative universities in Europe, according to the new ranking "Reuters Top 100." For this listing the British news agency analyzed how strongly the universities contribute to advances in technology and business through research findings and inventions.

The ranking "Reuters Top 100: Europe’s Most Innovative Universities" evaluated ten indicators, including:

  • how many patents the universities applied for and were awarded
  • how frequently these patents were cited in other patent applications
  • how often the university's scientific publications were cited in patent applications as well as in industrial research publications.

According to these criteria, TUM is number 5 in Europe and number 1 in Germany. In comparison to the previous year, TUM has overtaken the University of Oxford, among others. Also striking is that the other members of the EuroTech Universities Alliance also rank in the top 20: The École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) comes in at fourth place, the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) at number 12, and the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in 16th place.

At the top of the list is the Belgian KU Leuven, followed by Imperial College London and the University of Cambridge.

TUM President Wolfgang A. Herrmann commented, "This ranking, like others, singles out only one limited aspect of our overall agenda, but its conclusion is in line with the other international rankings, including the ,Shanghai Ranking’, the 'Nature Index', and the 'Global Employability University Ranking.'"
