Case Study Seminar “Entrepreneurial Strategy”

This course provides a forum for the in-depth examination of mindsets, methods, and managerial activities that follow the entrepreneurial process from opportunity recognition to growing ventures. The written and video cases, class exercises as well as the guest speakers’ experiences will expose students to viewpoints on both sides of the table -- that of the entrepreneur and that of the investor. Upon the completion of this course, students should:

  • Understand how to recognize and evaluate new venture opportunities (vs. ideas), understanding both the entrepreneur’s as well as the investor’s perspective;
  • Understand the issues faced by entrepreneurs when starting a venture in terms of the attitudes, knowledge and skills required to exploit an opportunity. A natural outcome of this process is a student’s self-assessment in understanding the appeal of entrepreneurship as own career path.
  • Understand business models, and importance of adaptation in the entrepreneurial process.
Audience:We welcome students of the following TUM degree courses:
Masters TUM-BWL,
 TUM-WIN, TUM NAWI, MCA, TUM-WITEC
Interdisciplinarity:  We are open to students of the above mentioned TUM degree courses as well as Erasmus students
Language: The course is held in English

The students are provided with the different methods and tools to enhance their understanding of cases, generalize their knowledge to different contexts, and in general, enhance their creative and critical thinking about opportunities.
Human centered: By exposing students to a broad range of settings in which entrepreneurs operate, the intent is to break the persistent but fundamentally wrong myth that entrepreneurship is limited to but a few heroic figures covered in the popular press. In other words, entrepreneurship is a management paradigm that is accessible to all of us and remains a choice available to us throughout our careers.

  • Generic design of a research question or PhD proposal
  • Their own, as well as others’ research method and design choice

PhD Seminar “Introduction to Organization Theory”

In this course, we want to familiarize students (in particular in entrepreneurship and innovation) early in their PhD with organization theory—this should be the first course you take on this topic. We will first scrutinize what theory is and how you enter an academic conversation, before we move on to jointly discuss eight “brands” of theory that are currently influential in management research. Of course, this list is not exclusive, and we strongly encourage you to (at least!) use this course as a launch pad to endeavor on more in-depth explorations of those branches of management theory that are most relevant to you. Finally, we look at how contributions to theory can be made today. At the end of this course, students will be able to demonstrate understanding, critical assessment, and application of the following:

  • Academic scholarship as different parallel conversations, and identification of your own position
  • The definition of management and organization theory, and a theoretical contribution in this space
  • Fundamentals of mainstream organization theories so as to understand related conversations and participate in more advanced courses on theories of specific subfields of management, such as entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurial Finance

The course is divided in three parts: First, different aspects of entrepreneurship, i.e. founding and managing an entrepreneurial company, are discussed. The entrepreneurial process and characteristics of successful entrepreneurs are analyzed. Special attention is put on sources of financing which are relevant in different development stages. This part also provides a broad overview of the private equity industry including both early stage venture capital funds and buyout funds.

Second, the course focuses on valuation of entrepreneurial ventures. The specific requirements for the valuation of entrepreneurial firms are identified. Standard valuation methods are then analyzed as to their applicability in different contexts. Valuation methods include the discounted cash flow approach, multiple approach and real option valuation. In addition, context-specific approaches to new venture valuation are considered. Factors influencing the negotiation process between an entrepreneur and an equity investor will be discussed and analyzed.

Third, the business model of private equity firms and the relationship between an equity investor and an entrepreneurial firm are analyzed in more detail. Based on a general understanding of the private equity industry, the refinancing and investment process of a private equity firm will be discussed intensively. The refinancing process is divided into three parts: fundraising, investor relations and the return of funds. The investment process mainly covers the following activities of a private equity firm: sourcing, screening, contracting, venture management and exiting. Special attention is given to both early stage venture capital funds and later stage buyout funds as different types of private equity.
