“Diversity is being invited to the party. Inclusion is being asked to dance.” Verna Myers
Content
At this point, we have heard quite a bit about diversity and unconscious biases. However, there is much more to learn about this topic! For example, do you know how to create an inclusive climate in your team? Do you know how to empower and support others? Do you know how to encourage potentially difficult conversations around diversity?
This workshop focuses on the behaviors that make team members feel appreciated and valued. An inclusive team creates a sense of belonging that will encourage its members to stay curious about differences and bring their authentic self to work. This, in turn, has the potential to enhance their performance. Using an evidence-based approach, we will give practical advice on fundamental topics, such as how to speak intelligently and respectfully about diversity and inclusion, as well as how to create and maintain an environment that promotes continuous learning.
Your takeaways
- You will understand the difference between diversity, equity, inclusion, and belongingness.
- You will further develop and articulate your awareness and personal philosophy on these topics.
- You will learn to identify and establish practices to cultivate a more inclusive environment in your team.
Methods
The workshop will be dynamic and interactive. In addition to the input from the course instructor, you will be given the opportunity to practice the skills and techniques discussed. Furthermore, there will be enough time to work on your specific questions and cases.

In recent times, consecutive crises (such as SarsCov2, supply chain, energy, ...) have placed increasing demands on leaders. Leaders have to take care of multiple tasks while also maintaining a dyadic, bidirectional relationship with different members of their team. When pressure increases, team cohesion, initiative and creativity may deteriorate, which increases the risk of interpersonal conflicts. This may drive some employees to find nonverbal “solutions” (“dialogues of action”) for personal difficulties like reducing working time, presenteeism, increasing days off work or even switching workplaces. Such developments often start with emotionally relevant situations within the leader-member dyad, or within a group, which are sometimes not fully perceived as such in their importance.
Against this background, how can emotionally challenging situations at the workplace be dealt with in an appropriate manner? And what can be done to increase team cohesion from a clinical and an evidence-based perspective?
Your takeaways
- You will be provided with video-based examples of difficult interpersonal situations at the workplace.
- You will get recommendations on how to tackle these challenging situations.
- You will discuss measures that help increase team cohesion and creativity.
Methods
In this talk, Prof. Gündel will provide some theory, clinical examples and tools on how to tackle difficult interpersonal situations at the workplace. You may bring in any related questions and issues that are of interest to you.
Date
07.12.2022
1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Calls are mounting for scholars, universities, and the whole academic system to contribute to sustainability. Researchers across disciplines are trying to move toward conducting more ‘engaged’ research, and universities increasingly encourage engagement and societal impact. Yet, engaged research comes with several tensions and challenges and thus can be difficult to do in the current academic system. In the session, Prof. Kump will share experiences from the Erasmus University Rotterdam that recently changed its strategy to focus on ‘societal impact’. She will elaborate on the forces at play for scholars who want to do engaged research, the conflicts amongst these forces, and strategies of doing engaged research in the face of these conflicts.
Your takeaways
- You will gain an overview of various types and facets of ‘engaged research’.
- You will understand common challenges of ‘engaged research’ in the current academic system.
- You will learn about potential strategies for doing engaged research for sustainability.
Methods
In this talk, Prof. Kump will report findings from an in-depth qualitative study with engaged researchers at the Erasmus University Rotterdam on their experiences. After the talk, there will be room for discussion and reflection on participants’ challenges with research for sustainability.

Most pre- and postdocs at German universities are working under fixed-term employment contracts according to the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (WissZeitVG). The overall duration of their employment is thereby limited to 12 (to 15) years. But who exactly meets the requirements for a fixed-term academic contract and how do you calculate the 12-year-cap? Under which circumstances is it possible to extend such a contract? And what about fixed-term contracts linked to third-party funding? This workshop provides you with an overview of the essential aspects of the German “Befristungsrecht” and the WissZeitVG.
Your takeaways
- You will learn about the legal regulations for fixed-term contracts with German universities and what this means for the employment of your scientific staff.
- You will get to know the most important elements of the “Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz” (WissZeitVG) and the Teilzeit- und Befristungsgesetz (TzBfG).
- You will learn when a fixed-term contract can be based on third-party funding.
Methods
The instructor will provide an overview of the legislation on fixed-term contracts in higher education and research. In addition, there will be time to discuss specific questions you may have.
