Research live: Expedition into the world of science

Visitors will be able to slip into the role of researchers in hands-on experiments. They will be able to partake in interesting lectures and discover the technologies that will help us in our everyday lives in the future. Research institutions that are normally closed to the public, like the General Electric European Research Center, the research neutron source or the supercomputing facility, will all open their doors from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on 11 October.

While temperatures near absolute zero are being generated in the Walther Meißner Institute, metals are molten in the neighboring Institute of Metal Forming and Casting. At the neutron source neutrons are decelerated down to the speed of bicycles while a few houses further the Maier-Leibnitz Laboratory accelerates particles to 25 percent of the speed of light.

The Center of Excellence Nanosystems Initiative Munich will showcase systems that can measure millionths of a millimeter while the researchers at the Cluster Origin and Structure of the Universe research the infinite depths of the universe. The Department of Mechanical Engineering will present prototypes of tomorrow’s technology. Mathematics and Computer Science, Chemistry and Physics will present experiments that demonstrate the ways in which these fields are integrated into our lives. And, as an alternative to brain jogging, athletically inclined guests can put themselves to the test by sliding down the parabolic arc.

With its tours, lectures and live experiments “Open House Day” will offer visitor’s an exciting foray into the world of science. Program points especially suited for children will be marked accordingly in the program brochure.

The Student Services Center (SSZ) will be present to inform prospective students about the Bachelor and Master degree programs at TU München, as well as about orientation programs, course offerings, admission requirements and application modalities.

Getting there: From Munich the Research Campus is best reached via the U6 underground line (final station Garching Forschungszentrum). By car, the Research Campus can be reached via the A 9 motorway, exit Garching-Nord. Parking is available between the B 11 state road and the Research Campus.
