TUM Future Learning Initiative
Dynamic, competence-oriented, and at the cutting edge – the teaching of the future is being shaped at TUM. Who knows better what it takes to achieve this than our students, teaching staff, and alumni? The TUM Future Learning Initiative (TFLI) aims to turn their ideas into reality.
Until 31 May 2025, all TUM students, teaching staff, and alums had the opportunity to contribute their ideas for improving teaching and learning at TUM.
We received numerous suggestions, ideas, and visions. These are now being viewed, reviewed, and evaluated by the jury. The winning proposals are expected to be announced in September. Their implementation will begin in January 2026.

TUM Future Learning Initiative 2025 – How to take part
Send your proposal for improving study and teaching at TUM to future-learning@tum.de. Applications are open from 10 March to 31 May 2025.
Send us a precise description of your project. Indicate how study and teaching at TUM will benefit from its implementation and how it can benefit as many people in the TUM community as possible. Outline the funds you need to implement your project, ideally within one year of being funded, and the milestones you want to achieve.
The total funding amount is 20,000 euros and will be distributed to the selected projects based on the evaluation of the proposals and the outlined funding requirements by the TUM Future Learning Initiative jury.
Please note the the Freund der TUM e.V. – Association of Alumni and Friends funding criteria, which are set out in the info sheet for applications for funding (German). Please submit the signed information sheet and an overview of the required funds and their planned use together with your proposal. You can use the template available for download below to break down the funding you require.
Funded projects must name a TUM Patron. This must be a TUM employee (administrative or teaching staff) with access to a cost center to which the funds can be transferred and who is responsible for their administration. At the end of the funding phase, proof of use of the allocated funds must be provided for the Freunde der TUM e.V. – Association of Alumni and Friends.
After the application deadline, we check whether the submitted proposals meet the purpose of the competition and the criteria for eligibility for funding from the Friends of TUM. We contact the relevant TUM departments to obtain a precise assessment of the project’s feasibility. We then prepare the information for the jury.
The jury is to meet in September 2025: Members of TUM’s Board of Management, of the specialist departments for study and teaching, of Freunde der TUM, and student representatives will select the TUM Future Learning Award winners. The decisive criteria for the evaluation are the eligibility for funding by the Friends of TUM e.V. in accordance with their statutes, the feasibility of the projects, realistic budget and time planning, and a clear benefit for as many students and/or teachers at TUM as possible.
The winners will be announced in fall 2025.
The winning teams of the TUM Future Learning Initiative will be able to use their allocated funding from the Freunde der TUM e.V. – Association of Alumni and Friends from January 2026 and begin implementing their project.
The funding period is usually one year. At the end of the period, the projects’ TUM Patrons must provide the Freunde der TUM e.V. – Association of Alumni and Friends with proof of use of the allocated funds.
