Scientific study accompanying the MINT-Impulse
The MINT-Impulse as part of the TUM Entdeckerinnen programme to promote girls have been scientifically monitored since 2024 by a longitudinal study conducted by the Technical University of Munich: ‘MINT promotion of girls - influence of practical professional experience and other support options on the technical self-concept’.
Objectives:
Our goals are to track a possible positive change in the girls' technical self-concept and to better understand the valuable support of parents and teachers with regard to career choice. In order to achieve our objectives, the girls' personal developments are evaluated in a survey at the beginning and end of the school year of the practical project as well as at the end of their time at school and compared with the statements made by their legal guardians and the teachers involved. The instruments used are mainly based on standardised question items already established in research and cover areas such as interest in technology/MINT, skills assessment, the importance of role models, communication about the project, and more. In addition, parents are invited on a voluntary basis to take part in a parent survey and short qualitative interviews are conducted with MINT teachers at the participating schools. The implementation of the study at the schools was approved by the Bavarian Ministry of Culture in December 2023.
Expected results:
The findings will help us to further develop the promotion of girls in MINT subjects and vocational orientation at Gymnasien and Realschulen. The participating schools will also gain valuable insights from the individual aspects of the survey (e.g. MINT background of the families of origin, girls' attitudes towards MINT). At the same time, participation provides an opportunity for self-reflection for all those involved.
