Public webinar with researchers from TUM and Oxford Internet Institute on June 15

Webinar: Hidden labor of AI in the Global South.

Since October 2021, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the Oxford Internet Institute (OII) have been collaborating on the topic of artificial intelligence (AI). Part of the collaboration is a series of public webinars on AI and work. In the next edition on Wednesday, June 15, researchers will talk about the labor that that enables modern AI development, which is concentrated in the Global South.

TUM Campus Heilbronn and the Oxford Internet Institute are offering a series of public webinars on the topic of "AI and work".

Behind artificial intelligence, there is always human labor. In addition to programming algorithms, this may take the form of “cloudwork”, where people train machine learning algorithms by hand. On another level, it's also hard manual labor, which enables modern AI, e.g. mining rare earths for the production of electronic components. Many people who use AI in their everyday lives are unaware of this labor.

The hidden labor of AI is the topic of the second edition of a series of public webinars hosted by the TUM Heilbronn Campus and the University of Oxford's OII. Participants will discuss, among other things, the implications of its hidden nature in exacerbating existing inequalities and what can be done to build AI globally in a fairer way.

Webinar

The webinar on Wednesday, June 15, 1 p.m. CEST, will be in English and digital-only. Participation is free of charge.

Cooperation between Oxford and TUM Heilbronn

The Oxford Internet Institute and TUM Campus Heilbronn launched their collaboration on AI in October 2021. This includes, among other things, research on social, ethical and societal implications of AI. Recently, Prof. Victoria Nash, Director of the OII, visited the TUM Campus Heilbronn and met with professors for first discussions about details of the future collaboration. In addition to cooperation in research, regular exchange at all levels of university life and learning from each other in cultural dialog is also part of the cooperation.

In February 2022, the OII and TUM Campus Heilbronn held their first webinar on the topic of "AI & Work". It is planned to continue the series at regular intervals with relevant topics and speakers.
