An interview with Architect Andreas Meck

The new cafeteria in Garching – with an outer shell made of wood

7,000 meals in a few hours, and 1,500 seats in a large hall – the new cafeteria in Garching was quite challenging for the planners. What were the challenges? Architect Andreas Meck in an inverview with KontakTUM, the TUM's alumni magazine.

The TUM alumnus and his office partner Axel Frühauf designed the cafeteria. "meck architekten", one of Germany's most sought-after architecture firms, builds residential and holiday homes as well as religious community centers and houses of worship. Andreas Meck is also involved in teaching. With his students, he likes to work on topics for which there is no room in everyday office life, and he wants to try out new things with them.

The new cafeteria at Campus Garching has a total floor space of more than 5,000 square meters, and it will have "a different character than the other buildings in Garching," says architect Meck. The house will have "a flat, wooden outer skin – on purpose, because that building material is not present on the campus in that form yet."
