The renowned British magazine Times Higher Education (THE) examines the global relevance of universities in various categories for the "University Impact Ranking". In the area of industry, innovation, and infrastructure, THE records the number of research publications in significant fields for sustainable innovations, such as energy, Industry 4.0, and smart cities. The ranking also considers how often research papers are cited in patents, how many start-ups are spun off, and how much third-party research funding universities receive from the industry.

TUM again achieved the highest possible score and ranked first for the fourth time – this time alongside eleven other universities.
