2016 Summer Olympics:

Seven TUM-students in Rio

Judoka Tobias Englmaier is a student of Mechanical Engineering. The 28-year-old will take part in the weight class up to 60 kilograms. He is from Landsberg, and his club is called TSV Grosshadern. In 2012, Engelmaier already took part in the Olympic Games in London, and he became German champion in the grown-ups category in 2014. At the World Championships in 2013 and the European Championships in 2014, he and his team won a bronze medal. The preliminary fights in his weight class will take place on August 6.

In Rio, Ferdinand Gerz will be one of the sailors in the “470 Class”. Gerz – who is 27 years old and a Bachelor’s student of TUM-BWL – already took part in the Olympics Games in London four years ago. He and his bowman finished on rank 13. He became European Champion in 2015 and managed to become seventh best in the 2016 World Championships. The preliminaries in Gerz’s class are scheduled for August 10.

Runner Christina Hering (21) will be taking part in the 800 meter event. She is a Bachelor student of Scientific Principles of Sport at TUM. She became German Champion in the 800 meter running event in 2014 and 2016, vice-champion in 2015, and she managed to reach the semi-finals of the 2015 World Championships. The women’s 800 meters run will take place on August 17.

Cyclist Claudia Lichtenberg has just completed her Bachelor’s course of Medical Engineering at TUM. She will be taking part in the women’s road race on August 7. The 30-year-old student’s most notable international successes were achieved in stage races. She won the 2009 Tour de l'Aude Cycliste Féminin and the Giro Donne as a member of the Cervélo-Lifeforce Cycling Team, and the 2013 Giro della Toscana Femminile as a member of the US team. In 2012, she took part in the Olympic Games in London.

The two TUM-students Florian Vogel and Philipp Wolf are swimmers. Both are Bachelor’s students of Civil Engineering at TUM as well as members of the team of the SG Stadtwerke München. In Rio, Vogel (who is 21 years old and from Bayreuth) will be taking part in the 400 meter freestyle (scheduled for August 6) and in the 4 x 200 meters freestyle relay (scheduled for August 9). Wolf, who is from Weiden, will turn 24 during the Olympic Games in Rio. He will take part in the 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay (August 7).

In Rio, the eventer Ben Vogg will be competing for Switzerland. He is a Bachelor’s student of Mechanical Engineering at TUM. He is from Gut Weiherhof in Radolfzell and will turn 24 in early September 24. His brother Felix, who is an equestrian too, will also represent Switzerland. Both belong to the most successful Swiss equestrians. The competitions in Rio – which involve dressage, a cross-country competition, and jumping – will start on August 6.
