Support for innovation and start-ups

Health Minister Gerlach visits TUM Venture Lab Healthcare

The Bavarian Minister of Health, Judith Gerlach, has visited the new laboratory facilities at the TUM Venture Lab Healthcare. The Minister handed over a funding grant of 500,000 euros for the SMART HEALTH program, which promotes technology transfer. The TUM Venture Lab Healthcare supports start-ups that put cutting-edge research findings in the fields of digital health, medical technology and life sciences into practice.

The twelve TUM Venture Labs each specialize in one important field of technology. They offer the start-up teams a direct link to cutting-edge research, specific technical infrastructure, tailored training programs, expertise for the respective market and global networking with the industry and investors.

Research transfer and the establishment of companies in the healthcare sector are particularly challenging and time-consuming due to the ethical and regulatory framework conditions. This makes the intensive and long-term support, the in-depth industry expertise and the optimal laboratory equipment that the TUM Venture Lab Healthcare offers start-up teams all the more important.

The TUM Venture Lab Healthcare, which is located at the TUM University Hospital, can now been raised to a new level. The funding is part of the SMART HEALTH program, with which the Bavarian State Ministry of Health, Care and Prevention promotes the linking of science, practice and entrepreneurship, also in the subject areas of the TUM Venture Labs ChemSpace and Food / Agro / Biotech.

More than 100 start-ups founded in one year

“We have long recognized the potential of start-ups in Bavaria,” says Health Minister Judith Gerlach. "Bavaria is already a leading hub for innovation, especially in the health sector. Our universities, research institutions and companies in the health and care sector are working hand in hand to achieve this, supported in many ways by the Free State of Bavaria."

“Munich is one of the most successful deep-tech hubs in Europe,” says TUM President Prof. Thomas F. Hofmann. "More than 100 technology-oriented companies were founded at TUM in 2024 alone. The great strength of the innovation ecosystem is the excellent cooperation between the various players. Science, established companies, investors and Bavarian politics form a network that puts start-ups on the road to success. The funding of SMART HEALTH at the TUM Venture Lab Healthcare is further important proof of this strength."

“In order to exploit Bavaria's innovation potential, research results must be put into practice faster and in a more targeted manner,” emphasizes Dr. Philipp Gerbert, CEO of the TUM Venture Labs. "In the TUM Venture Lab Healthcare, we act as an enabler and accelerator for start-ups that develop technologies for prevention, diagnostics and therapy. With the SMART HEALTH initiative, we can intensify the successful work of the TUM Venture Labs to make research results applicable and scalable and thus create sustainable added value for society."

The TUM Venture Labs offer direct access to cutting-edge research, technical infrastructure and market expertise in twelve fields of technology. Most recently, more than 100 companies were founded at TUM in one year and more than 1,100 start-up teams were supported by UnternehmerTUM and the Venture Labs. UnternehmerTUM, which invests with its own venture capital fund, has twice been voted Europe's best start-up hub by the Financial Times.
