Bavaria consolidates AI expertise

TUM professor Sami Haddadin is chairman of the Bavarian Council on AI

The Bavarian State government has created the Bavarian Council on AI to consolidate Bavaria's expertise in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and to further expand its AI network. Prof. Sami Haddadin, Director of the Munich School of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MSRM) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), has been appointed to chair this body. The Bavarian Council on AI consists of leading experts in the field of artificial intelligence and is to provide important impulses to both researchers and policymakers in the planning of AI activities. The council will also foster international visibility.

The council consists of 21 outstanding representatives from science and business, divided evenly among university faculty and staff, members from non-university research bodies and representatives of the economic sector. The objective of the AI Council is to launch and promote strategies and measures for mobilizing scientific and economic potentials in the field of AI. The Council will also provide important impulses to policymakers and will contribute to the networking of AI research at an international level.

"The Bavarian Council on AI embodies the AI strategy of the Hightech Agenda Bavaria," says Prof. Haddadin. "It is a particular pleasure and honor for me to lead this fantastic body of experts together with my Co-Chairs. With its membership of outstanding experts from science and business, the Council will help carry on the Bavarian tradition in AI and will set an international standard: AI Made in Bavaria."

In addition to Professor Haddadin, Alena Buyx, Professor for Ethics in Medicine and Health Technologies  and Director of the TUM Institute of History and Ethics in Medicine, is also a member of the Bavarian Council on AI for the university section.

Members of the Bavarian Council on AI also include TUM professors Fabian J. Theis (Co-Chair), as Director of the Institute of Computational Biology at the German Research Center for Environmental Health (HMGU), Alin Albu-Schäffer, as Director of the Institute for Robotics and Mechatronics at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and Claudia Eckert, as Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied and Integrated Security (AISEC), for the Council's non-university research section.

•    The AI Council will be complemented by the AI Agency ("KI-Agentur")  at the Leibniz Supercomputing Center (LRZ): The operative unit will orient its activities to the strategic guidelines of the Council and will implement them in specific projects in the Bavarian state AI network.

•    The founding of the Bavarian Council on AI and the AI Agency expands the Bavarian AI strategy of the Hightech Agenda Bavaria and of the acceleration program Hightech Agenda Plus, in which an AI network will be established throughout all of Bavaria and 100 additional AI professorships will be created at Bavarian universities.
