Launch of the "Munich Fire Science Partnership"

TUM and Munich Fire Department join forces for sustainable fire protection

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the Munich Fire Department are launching a long-term research collaboration at the interface of preventive and defensive fire protection. The focus is on practical topics such as firefighting for lithium-ion batteries, operational tactics, and resource-efficient fire safety.

"The 'Munich Fire Science Partnership' combines scientific excellence in fire protection with real operational practice. As a result, we can reflect on the relevance of research projects. Our shared goal is to make fire protection more sustainable and resource-efficient at the intersection between firefighting and preventive fire safety," says Prof. Claudius Hammann from the Chair of Fire Science and Engineering.

"Firefighting largely relies on experience gained from individual situations. It is now important to link this with scientific methods to derive general rules that apply to all situations," emphasizes Wolfgang Schäuble, Chief Fire Officer and Head of the Munich Fire Department.

Extinguishing tactics, building materials and fire safety

The cooperation addresses key challenges of the energy transition and urban safety. Planned activities include experiments on extinguishing lithium-ion batteries, developing new initial attack strategies for operations in Munich, and assessing modern building materials in terms of safety for the public and emergency personnel. In addition to practical experiments, models will be created to quantify fire safety levels and identify potential savings.

The partnership builds on a series of successful joint projects between TUM and the Munich Fire Department. The close connection between research and practice will lead to the transformation of the previously selective collaboration into a permanent, long-term research cooperation. The collaboration will initially run until November 30, 2031.

The new professorship for Fire Science and Fire Engineering at the TUM School of Engineering and Design, in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, was founded in the summer semester of 2025. The professorship integrates the existing, recognized fire testing laboratories for the fire behavior of building materials and components.
