Recap

This was the workshop

At the beginning of February 2024, 12 schoolgirls from the MINT-Impulse programme visited the modern high-tech workshop MakerSpace Munich Urban Colab in Munich. Here, start-ups, established companies, academia, talented individuals and the city of Munich develop and test innovative concepts together with citizens. The girls travelled from some of the more distant locations of our partner schools to take part in a laser cutter workshop. Two girls from the Bavarian Forest travelled the longest distance.

To kick things off, course leader Michael gave an overview of projects that have already been developed locally and launched on the market. A tour of the MakerSpace workshops, where numerous craft topics can be worked on, provided deeper insights. After a short pizza break, the group played a “maker memory” game in which the various workpieces had to be assigned to the machines on which they were manufactured. The girls were able to quickly categorise the objects and Michael was immediately impressed. Later on, they started planning the design of their own engraved piece. The group designed very personal and creative ideas on the computer - using the graphics software was very easy for everyone.

Afterwards, it was finally time for the real implementation and the group moved to the workshop, where the individual ideas were engraved at high speed on wood, and in some cases also on plastic, using the “Epilog FusionPro 32” laser cutter. The girls later assembled everything into a key ring that everyone could take home with them. One keyring was printed with Korean writing and taken on a school exchange trip to South Korea a few weeks later.

With the insights into interdisciplinary prototyping in the MakerSpace, everyone starts their own technology learning journey - regardless of whether it ends up being a technical degree programme, a start-up or simply enthusiasm.
