Locations of TUM

TUM spans several large sites in Bavaria: Munich, Garching, Weihenstephan and Straubing. These are home to the TUM Schools and Departments and the university's most important research facilities. TUM is represented internationally today with locations of its own on several continents.

Since its founding in 1868, the heart of TUM beats in Munich. Its presence within the city is divided among three important sites: the downtown campus at Arcisstraße, Olympic Park, and the university hospitals.

The Garching campus north of Munich constitutes the center of natural sciences and technology at TUM. With about 20,000 students at different TUM Schools and Departments, it is the largest of all TUM locations. Also focused on top-level research at this campus are several research centers and the TUM Graduate School. The campus is easy to reach from downtown Munich with the subway line U6 or via the Autobahn.

TUM has concentrated its expertise in life sciences in the TUM School of Life Sciences at the green and modern Weihenstephan campus. It is located on the outskirts of the old cathedral town of Freising and has evolved from the traditional disciplines of agricultural and life sciences. The campus was incorporated into TUM in 1930, and this location with its rich history is now a leading research center for top scientists. There is even a brewery on site, making TUM the only university in the world with its own brewery (founded 1040).

From molecules to plants and animals to ecosystems and landscapes, Molecular Life Sciences, Life Science Systems and Life Science Engineering are explored and taught under the motto “One Health”.

Since October 2017, the TUM Campus Straubing for Biotechnology and Sustainability is the fourth main research and study campus of the university.

Here, next-generation leaders pursue their studies at the TUM School of Management, situated in one of Europe’s foremost regions for innovation: Heilbronn in the state of Baden-Württemberg.

TUM has set up a campus in Singapore to provide a world-class research and study facility for the whole of Asia: The German Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) - TUM Asia Pte. Ltd.

  • Pioneer: In 2002, TUM set up TUM Asia – the first German academic venture abroad. In Singapore, one of Asia’s most dynamic cities, TUM has teamed up with major international companies and leading universities for this undertaking.
  • Research: TUM Asia is heading up the „TUM CREATE - Electromobility for Mega-Cities“ research project aimed at developing an electric car tailored to tropical cities.
