The THE World University Rankings primarily monitor the number of citations per publication and the number of papers published per researcher in international scientific journals. It also surveys the academic community to gather information about a university’s reputation in research and teaching. In addition, the rankings factor in the international reach of a university and the amount of funding it receives. The survey does not look at the impact of the university’s work on the economy or society as a whole – for example, the number of spin-offs or investments in companies, the professional career paths of graduates or the effects of teacher training.

TUM comes in at number 105 in the rankings. Last year, it was placed 88th. The next German technical universities on the list are KIT (place 151) and RWTH Aachen (place 154). THE thus still places TUM at the top of the German ladder, even though it did not rank as highly as it did last year.

Recently, both the Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai Ranking) and the QS World University Ranking listed TUM in 53rd place, making it the number one higher education institution in Germany.
