The TUM School of Education, which Prenzel has led since it was established in 2009, is unique in Germany. It coordinates teacher education at TUM and links this training with innovative methods and insights from pedagogical research. A special emphasis is placed on training qualified teachers for the so-called STEM curriculum: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Prenzel's own research focuses on questions of quality assurance and quality development in education systems, educational processes, and international comparisons of school performance. For more than a decade, he has served in leadership roles in initiatives for educational research, assessment, and reform on both the national and European levels.

The Council of Science and Humanities advises the German federal and state governments on university development, science, and research. It also plays a leading role in efforts to secure the international competitiveness of science in Germany. This includes the Excellence Initiative, a multi-year, multibillion-euro investment in boosting both the quality and visibility of research in Germany's top universities.
