Research from TUM in Technologist No. 9

Cover story "High-Tech-Sports":

  • New Materials: To improve the safety of mountain bikes, Veit Senner (Chair of Sport Equipment and Sport Materials) and his colleagues are working on the optimization of modern bicycle frames.
  • Ending the pain: Surgeons can fit the perfect prothesis on a patient thanks to the computer simulations of Prof. Rüdiger Westermann, professor for computer graphics and visualization. He simulates the forces that act on a patient's bone. His supports not only the surgeon but is also useful for healthy athletes.

Our weighty new view of the universe

Gravitational waves exist. Scientists from the LIGO-Collaboration recorded the evidence in September 2015. Physicist Ewald Müller from TUM and the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics tells us which further exciting discoveries involving gravitational waves are now to be expected.

All abord for the future – Returning to the rails

  • Putting goods back on the track: Why Europe's rail freight has long been overtaken by heavy goods vehicles on Europe's road. Answers from Horst Wildemann, head of the Research Institute for Management, Logistics and Production at TUM.
  • Gotthard Base Tunnel: Did you know that scientists from TUM were involved in the construction of the world's longest tunnel? They were teams of the Chair of Geodesy and the Chair of Road, Railway and Airfield Construction.
