Anniversary year 2018:

Beach volleyball fever at TUM

Big events cast their shadows before: In the context of TUM’s 150th anniversary, the World University Championships (WUC) in beach volleyball will take place in Munich next year – at the TUM’s new beach volleyball facility in the middle of the Olympiapark.

There are thirteen beach volleyball courts available, built to international standards. The facility was completed within only nine months – using 4,800 tons of sand, equivalent to 175 truckloads.
“We now have the largest and most modern beach volleyball facility in Bavaria. This will definitely be an enrichment to the offers in the scope of university sports,” said Michael Hahn, head of the Zentraler Hochschulsport (ZHS) in Munich, during the inauguration ceremony.

A venue for recreational sports and competitions

The courts are located on the grounds of the TUM’s tennis complex between the TUM campus in the Olympiapark and the BMW Welt, replacing the unused tennis courts and the old golf short course.
It has already been proven that the facility is not only suitable for recreational sports, but also for competitions. In July, the German University Championships (Deutsche Hochschulmeisterschaften, DHM) in beach volleyball took place there. For three days, 73 teams from all over Germany had fought for the title.

Full rehearsal for 2018

Back then, the winners had been the teams Wolf/Wolf from Frankfurt (men) and Karnbaum/Niemczyk from Berlin (women). The TUM’s local heroes Yannic Beck and Tim Noack won the silver medal, and Tom Strohbach (LMU) and his partner Pablo Karnbaum (TUM) won bronze.

The DHM served as a full rehearsal for the event on international level in the coming year. The ninth edition of the WUC in beach volleyball will take place from July 9 to 13, 2018, organized by TUM in cooperation with the General German University Sports Federation (Allgemeiner Deutscher Hochschulsportverband[RK1]). 32 men’s and women’s teams from all over the world will be taking part in this major event.

Marketing strategy

The TUM Chair of Sport and Health Management is involved in the preparations, among others. As part of a project study, three student working groups are developing and implementing a marketing strategy for the WUC 2018, over the course of three months.

In addition, there are plans for a cooperation with the department of Media and Communication. As part of a practice-oriented seminar on the topic of sports PR, the students will be able to apply their knowledge in practice, for example through press work or social media support.
