QS World University Ranking: TUM again the best German technical university

Top rankings for the natural and engineering sciences

The Technische Universität München (TUM) has performed very well again in a renowned international ranking system. In the QS World University Ranking, which was published today, the TUM is in 54th place. This makes it Germany’s third best university and confirms its unrivalled position in the natural and engineering sciences at national level. Among technical universities, the TUM is one of the top five in Europe and the best in Germany by a wide margin.

The QS World University Ranking is based on the universities’ reputation among scientists and industry, the number of citations per scientist, the supervisory relationship between lecturers and students, and the number of international employees and students. The rankings in the faculty areas are based on reputation and citations alone. The British human resources service provider QS uses both statistics and surveys carried out among scientists and human resource managers.

The TUM has managed to maintain the very strong position achieved in previous years (53rd in 2013). It performs particularly well in the natural sciences, for which it is ranked 19th, and the engineering sciences, for which it ranks 27th.

Apart from the TUM, the only German universities ranked among the top 100 are Heidelberg University (49th) and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (52nd). The second-ranked German technical university is the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, which ranked 127th.

A month ago, the TUM also emerged as the best ranked German technical university in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai Ranking), in which it achieved 53rd place.
