Cornerstone laid for new cafeteria building on Garching campus of TUM
New cafeteria for the research campus in Garching
A staff of over 50 prepares between 4000 and 5000 meals per day on the Garching research campus. But the Graching cafeteria has been operating at its technical and capacity limits for a long time. The building, which was designed some 40 years ago, meets neither modern technical nor energy efficiency demands.
Fitted with the latest technology, the new cafeteria will consume significantly less energy. Thanks to new dishwashers, the old trays will be replaced by porcelain plates. The newly designed serving stations will allow greater variety on the menu: salad bar, vegetable bar, soup station, pizza counter, pasta buffet, wok station and grill, vegetarian and vegan meals.
On some 5300 square meters of floor space canteen and cafeteria will offer seating for 1750 visitors. The design of the Munich planning office Meck Architekten comprises a two-story, square building structure with a large atrium. Access points and cafeteria are located on the ground floor, with the 2740 square meter dining room and kitchen on the second floor. The building costs are slated around 44.5 million euro.
Research campus Garching: A success story
Barely 2000 students visited the campus when the Garching cafeteria opened its doors in 1978. Today it is around 15,000 students and 7000 staff members. And the campus continues to grow, year for year.
The Catalysis Research Center of the TU Munich has just opened. The German federal government and the state of Bavaria invested a total of 84.5 million euro for the center and and created 300 new laboratory jobs. The new NMR Center and the Center for Advanced Laser Applications are taking form in the north, to be followed shortly by the TUM Center for Protein Assemblies – a further investment of around 150 million euro.
Already under construction is the new Center for Energy and Information at Lichtenbergstraße. The Fraunhofer Gesellschaft plans to build at least two institutes. To the south, the areas the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering will relocate to stand ready. Siemens will build a new research center in the direct vicinity. Growth is also planned at the southern end of the campus: The Max Planck Institutes are expanding and in the fall 2017 the new “Supernova”-planetarium of the European Southern Observatory will be inaugurated.

“The expansion of the social infrastructure with canteen, cafeteria and a zone for student communication will significantly improve the learning and working environment for students and scientists on the TUM campus in Garching,” said Science Minister, Dr. Ludwig Spaenle during the cornerstone ceremony. “The roughly 44.5 million euro are a very good investment.”
“The research campus in Garching is a fantastic success story,” exclaims TUM President Prof. Wolfgang A. Hermann. “Excellence attracts excellence. New research facilities are permanently being added. The relocation of the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering will provide further impetus for this development. And healthy nutrition will foster the achievement of exceptional research results.”
