“GALILEO” infrastructure project celebrates its topping out ceremony
Research campus Garching gets new center
While the scientific facilities of the Garching research campus developed rapidly, the development of the infrastructure remained behind. An important step forward was the connection to the subway a few years ago. The infrastructure project "GALILEO", which today celebrates its topping-out ceremony, is the next important cornerstone for future campus development. The long-stretched building complex will be ready for occupancy in the TUM anniversary year of 2018.
In the core of the complex is the main auditorium, with a seating capacity of 1400, the largest of the TUM. A novel adaptive acoustic concept allows the auditorium to be adjusted to different types of use. Classical concerts and cinema performances can be held without modifications to the building, as can lectures and speeches, always with perfectly tuned acoustics.
In addition, there are a lecture hall that seats 300 people and two seminar rooms for up to 100 people each. The foyer of the main auditorium provides up to 2000 square meters of floor space for congress-accompanying exhibitions.
Hotel and restaurants
Alongside the hotel with guest house and congress center, there will be numerous restaurants and infrastructure facilities. Contracts with a microbrewery-restaurant and a hamburger shop, as well as an Italian and a Vietnamese restaurant have already been signed. Add to this the gastronomic offerings of the hotel restaurant.
The basement will house a full range super market and smaller shops, including a post office, a stationary shop, ATMs and a fitness center that may also be used by students and staff members.
Linked to research
While the southern part of the building ensemble contains the hotel and guest house, the northern section comprises mainly office space. At almost 3000 square meters, the TUM is one of the largest tenants in the office section.
As a new partner of TU Munich’s “Industry on Campus” concept, the renowned automotive components supplier DRÄXLMAIER Group will rent around 1000 square meters of office and laboratory floor space. Further company tenants are in negotiation.
GALILEO: Key milestone achieved
TUM President Herrmann, who was appointed as professor of chemistry in Garching 32 years ago, started campaigning for campus vitalization early on as Dean, for the subway connection as well as for the central infrastructure project, GALILEO.
“Our Garching campus is among the most important scientific locations in Europe, and it is growing rapidly. There were many obstacles to overcome on the path to GALILEO. Last but not least, the financial crisis has questioned the project more than once,” says president Prof. Wolfgang A. Hermann, who thanked the investor of the public private partnership, Thomas Zug, for his entrepreneurial foresight and excellent collaboration.
