13 –17 March: Photography action for the International Action Weeks Against Racism

Facing up to racism

Hundreds of people showing their faces on an enormous poster: This action by the Technical University of Munich (TUM) is intended as a symbolic act to stand up to racism. Everyone wishing to participate can have their photo taken on 13/14 March on the Garching campus or on 16/17 March at the campus in Munich. The action is part of the International Action Weeks Against Racism.

The photo booths of the "TUM: Junge Akademie" will be open from 10 am to 2 pm at the Garching Center of Excellence on 13/14 March and at the same times in the immatriculation hall in the main building in Munich on 16/17 March. The photos will be combined in a poster that will be displayed for a week in Munich and Garching under the heading "Power of TUM" as a call for solidarity and tolerance.

The actions in conjunction with the International Action Weeks Against Racism take place every year on or around 21 March. That date has been declared the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination by the United Nations. It commemorates the Sharpeville massacre, in which South African police opened fire on a demonstration on 21 March 1960, killing 69 people.

Science needs openness and tolerance

TUM firmly believes that science needs tolerance and openness to the world. About one quarter of its students come from other countries around the globe. TUM has offices on five continents and maintains close ties to more than 150 partner universities.

TUM's mission statement says: "At TUM, we view internationality as a mindset connecting our home with the world. We welcome talent from all over the globe. Based on a liberal set of values grounded in an enlightened society, our open-minded network promotes respect for the cultural identity of people in other regions and cultures of the world. With our international presence in science and technology, we want to foster better understanding between nations."
