Wooden auditorium building provides space for over 800 students in Garching

Jürgen Manchot auditorium building inaugurated

The number of students at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) has more than doubled over the past 15 years. Notwithstanding considerable investments by the Free State of Bavaria, the number of lecture hall seats has not kept pace with this growth. A new auditorium building now relieves situation on the Garching campus.

A new auditorium was recently erected in the triangle between the cafeteria, the Center for Energy and Information and the chemistry building on the TUM Garching campus. The building bears the name of the TUM alumnus Jürgen Manchot, whose family remains closely affiliated through the Jürgen Manchot Foundation with the Chemistry Department.

With floor space of around 750 square meters, the building’s two lecture halls accommodate 380 and 450 students, respectively. In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the TUM and the 30th anniversary of the Manchot Foundation, the foundation made a significant contribution to the equipment and furnishing of the lecture halls.

Auditorium building with innovative wood construction

The new building expands on the interim auditorium building with two lecture halls with 280 and 450 seats, located in front of the Departments of Mathematics and Computer Science. The cost-effective timber construction thrilled the professional community in 2011 and subsequently received numerous awards and accolades.

Deubzer, King, Rimmel architects were also responsible for the new building. In addition to the expansion along one axis, they improved the building services in the follow-up project. The innovative wood construction and striking facade design were retained.
