Private housing market

Most students and staff of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) live in private accommodation. To search for accommodation, you can use the housing online exchange service run by the university. Find this and more information on this page on how to hunt for private rooms and apartments.

Public housing referral service – free of charge

The following public institutions offer a private room rental service free of charge. Students can ask for details of free rooms from private landlords. The amount of rooms on offer is rather small, though, so that only few students each semester can be given a place to live.

Shared appartments

There are many students in Germany, and Munich is no exception, who live in shared accommodation called "Wohngemeinschaften" or "WGs", for short. Each member of the WG has his/her own room, and the bathroom and kitchen are shared with the other tenants.

It is usually possible to find a room or a flat of this description without having to pay an agency fee, and it is the generally the most economical solution for people looking for singles accommodation in Munich.

Find a room in a shared apartment among the TUM apartment listings or various online portals.

Accommodaton in return for household assistance

Students lodge with elderly citizens and help them with their day-to-day household tasks. In return they are offered inexpensive or even free accommodation. These opportuinities are, however, very rare.

Newspapers: Classified ads

The local press is also a good source of advertisements for apartments/flats and rooms to let, which are mainly published on wednesdays, thursdays and saturdays (depending on the newspaper). Please be aware that not all listings published in print do also appear on the paper's website – or vice versa.

Tip: If you are already in Munich, it is a good idea to buy a newspaper at the train stations, or underground (U-Bahn) or suburban railway stations (S-Bahn) the evening before the publication day, so as to be able to contact landlords/landladies early, or to browse through the online ads.

You may also want to search real estate portals on the web for apartment listings.
