New MOOC by TU9: Communication Acoustics

From noise to information

A new massive open online course (MOOC) by T9, the alliance of leading Institutes of Technology in Germany, shows which factors play a role in the transmission of acoustic messages and how new technologies can help improve communication. Scientists from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) also contributed to the course content on the topic of “Communication Acoustics”.

TUM started its first MOOC in 2014, making it one of the pioneers among German universities. It uses its online courses to impart knowledge to people all over the world. The MOOCs produced by TUM are much more than just recorded lectures. They consist of several units of a few minutes each that employ various video elements. Course participants can also solve interactive tasks, access further learning resources, and connect with other participants via online forums.  They take a test at the end of the course.

Communication Acoustics MOOC

The field of communication acoustics deals with issues of acoustics in communication between people and other people or machines, but also in terms of the communication of machines with each other. This new TU9 course provides an introduction to a variety of fields, such as speech acoustics, electronic acoustics, psychoacoustics, and audio technology. The free-to-access offer is designed for a period of 14 weeks with a weekly study time of six to eight hours. The professors involved include Dr. Martin Buchschmid, Prof. Gerhard Müller and Prof. Bernhard Seeber of the Department of Civil, Geo and Environmental Engineering and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at TUM.
