New career paths for mid-level academic staff
Our new qualification and careers program CareerDesign@TUM is designed to support our mid-level academic staff. The first of its kind in Germany, the program offers attractive academic career path options other than the professorship route.
Five career paths
Five different career paths are available for the future development of our mid-level academic staff, the so-called „Mittelbau“. These qualification programs are primarily aimed at experienced academics with a PhD.
We identify individual interest in and aptitude for specific roles and responsibilities, and use assessment, coaching, mentoring and systematic qualification programs to shape each career path.
- Scientific Service (TUM Researcher): Researchers work directly within a chair, conduct their own research and coordinate research activities. They apply for external funding, perform science-related administration tasks and have a reduced teaching workload.
- Academic teaching (TUM Lecturer): Lecturers enjoy autonomy in their teaching with research-oriented content in defined teaching units in accordance with the TUM Professional Profiles (siehe TUM Agenda 2030, pdf, 1,5 MB) richten.
- Science Management (TUM Science Manager): Science managers are active in the supervision of scientific support units or central university services, e.g. the management of departments, schools or research clusters, in faculty recruitment, the International Center or TUM ForTe.
- Innovation and Spin-off Management (TUM Entrepreneurial Advisor): Entrepreneurial advisors promote up-and-coming entrepreneurial talents in preparation and implementation of start-ups in the technology sector.
- Scientific-Technical Operations (TUM Technical Expert): Technical experts operate, maintain and develop the apparaturs infrastructure, for example large-scale machines in TUM Technology Core Facilities. They also support technology transfer, for example by contributing to standardization efforts or providing advice to industry. Other possible fields of activity include technical testing institutes, central laboratories and IT centers.
Three levels – Example: academic teaching
Employees acquire professional competencies during the three phases of every career path. They receive a certificate when they have successfully completed their qualification.
- Entry/basic level (assistant lecturer): The focus is on subject-specific expertise and skills typical for the role and responsibilities of a lecturer, i.e. teaching methodology and teaching skills as well as knowledge of the university system.
- Promotion phase (lecturer): Acquiring management skills in order to plan, manage and monitor processes, i.e. course management, project management and change management.
- Senior level (senior lecturer): Management skills required to set goals and lead people, in particular staff leadership and strategic leadership.
We expect and promote the following attitudes: entrepreneurial thinking and action, innovative spirit, flexibility, loyalty, performance motivation, goal orientation, teaching orientation, self-reflection.
