Top in THE University Ranking

TUM is best university in Germany and EU

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) is once again the best university in Germany and the EU. This is the result of the ranking of the renowned British magazine "Times Higher Education" (THE). In THE's worldwide comparison, TUM continues to rank 30th.

At TUM, excellent research and teaching are closely connected.

TUM President Prof. Thomas F. Hofmann said: "I am delighted that we have been able to establish ourselves among the world's top 30 universities for the second year in a row. We have the outstanding commitment and excellent research and teaching at TUM to thank for this. All employees and students have reason to be proud of their university.

Nevertheless, we will not overestimate the rankings either, because such important areas as the top medical care in our clinics or the quality of education of the next generation of teachers are not covered by such rankings at all. The same applies to the innovative capacity of our engineers. But their impact in translating research results into practical applications is extremely important to us."

How rankings are created

University rankings take various factors into account: On the one hand, scientists worldwide are asked about the reputation of universities in research and teaching. On the other hand, data such as the number of publications per researcher, the citations per publication, the supervision ratio of teachers and students, the third-party funding acquired, the degree of internationalization and the number of Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals are evaluated.
