Privately run student halls of residence

There are also a number of privately run halls of residence offering low-cost accommodation. These are mostly run by associations, the churchers or social organizations.

Association-Run Student Housing

Housing complexes operated by associations typically expect a special commitment to community service or political activities. New residents are carefully screened. Because the rooms are so popular, due in part to the low monthly rent, waiting lists are long.

Church-run student housing

Many of the residence halls run by Catholic and Protestant churches accept applications from students who belong to other denominations and religions. Others require that applicants belong to a specific religion and demonstrate their community involvement. A letter of reference from the student’s home parish may also be required in some cases.

Students are expected to participate in the activity program of their chosen residence hall.

Since there are no vacancies once the semester starts, pay close attention to the application closing dates! Before applying, find out which residence hall is the right one for you.

Privately run halls of residence

Apartments or rooms in privately-run student housing run cost significantly more than those operated by the Student Union.

Lists can be found via the Jugendinformationszentrum München (JIZ) - website in German only / browse pdf file for "Kommerzielle Anbieter"

The proprietors are generally willing to enter into rental agreements with foreign students who have not yet moved to Munich, making privately-run housing a viable alternative for our international guests.

Please check on the houses' websites well in advance of your intended arrival date for information about application requirements and conditions.

Halls of residence for young women

Some halls of residence are restricted to young women, who study at university or secondary school or who are doing vocational training. These halls are mainly run by religious and social organizations.
