The cash prize totaling 1.3 million Swedish krona per year is provided by the Nobel Sustainability Trust. The awards will be presented in three categories, one each for excellent research and development in the respective fields Water and Energy, and one for Leadership in Implementation of sustainability projects. The prize recipients will be selected by a panel comprised of international experts as well as TUM professors and will be organized by the TUM Institute for Advanced Study (TUM-IAS).

Economic and social well-being as sustainable objectives

Dr. Michael Nobel, Chairman of the NST, says: "The economic and social well-being of civilization will depend in large part on the availability of energy and a sustainable approach to agriculture and forestry, industrial production and water treatment. This will require considerable intellectual and financial efforts. The NST wants to support this process. As our new partner, TUM shares the same convictions."

Prof. Thomas F. Hofmann, President of TUM, comments: "Sustainability is a guiding vision in our plan of action. Our TUM Sustainable Futures Strategy 2030 thus links technological aspects with ecological, economic and social aspects of sustainable development. We are honored to be able to apply our expertise in choosing the prize recipients."

Prof. Michael Molls, Director of TUM AS, says: "As a researcher and as a physician I am committed to working on the topic of sustainability. I am very pleased that TUM-IAS is coordinating the overall process for selecting the sustainability award winners in collaboration with international experts and TUM colleagues."
